Karelian Bear Dog is a medium-sized, solidly built, Spitz-type dog, with a triangular shaped head, prick ears, and a hard, straight coat, black or black and white medium length. The length of the body from the point of buttocks to the tip of the sternum, is slightly longer than the height measured at the withers. Coat slightly longer on the thighs can make the length of the body seem larger. The tail is carried in a loose curl over the back, although a natural or bob tail stub is acceptable. Honorable scars or other evidence of injury arising from work in the field, should not be penalized.
Karelian Bear Dog has a quiet temperament, but stable, and is very dedicated to his teacher. Karelians have strong hunting instincts. They tend to be aggressive with other dogs, especially in their own territory, so they do not work well in a package. They are brave and confident, and attack bear and other big game animals without hesitation. His senses, especially smell, are very interested. They are never aggressive towards people.
